Toronto Courthouse

The new Toronto Courthouse, designed by the internationally acclaimed Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with NORR Architects, represents a significant advancement in accessibility and contemporary courthouse design. Rising 17 storeys, the building incorporates innovative features including video capabilities for remote attendance, barrier-free witness boxes, braille signage, and tactile wayfinding throughout its public spaces.

Franklin Precast Terrazzo Company Inc. played an important role in enhancing the courthouse’s accessibility. Thousands of stainless-steel tactile domes and bars were strategically installed throughout the public areas to provide clear, durable wayfinding. Unique tactile elements at the courtroom entrances were fabricated in Chatham, Ontario, with the large precast panels carefully manufactured to match the specifications of their stainless-steel counterparts—combining accessibility, precision, and architectural consistency.

Working collaboratively with Franklin Terrazzo Inc. and EllisDon Design Build Inc., Franklin Precast Terrazzo Inc. also contributed to stunning epoxy terrazzo installations throughout the courthouse. This craftsmanship can be seen across the expansive ground- and first-floor lobbies, 12 elevator cabs, public corridors, and washrooms throughout all 17 levels.

One of the project’s standout architectural features is the striking staircase connecting the ground and first floors. The staircase shows five-foot-long, self-supporting epoxy terrazzo treads with precisely detailed nosing, installed over a meticulously levelled concrete slab to achieve a seamless and flawless finish.
