New Toronto Courthouse

The new Toronto Courthouse, designed by the internationally acclaimed Renzo Piano Building Workshop in collaboration with NORR Architects, proudly stands as the most accessible courthouse in Ontario. This impressive 17-story structure features advanced elements such as video capabilities for remote attendance, barrier-free boxes, braille signage. Tactile indicators installed by Franklin Terrazzo Company Inc. enhance navigation, with thousands of stainless-steel domes and bars strategically placed in public spaces. Notably, unique tactiles at the courtroom entrances were fabricated in Chatham, Ontario, ensuring that the large precast panels matched the specifications of their stainless-steel counterparts for optimal accessibility.

 

Franklin Precast Terrazzo Company Inc. collaborated with Franklin Terrazzo Inc. and EllisDon Design Build Inc. to create stunning epoxy terrazzo installations throughout the public spaces of the courthouse. This beautiful flooring can be found in the expansive lobbies of the ground and first floors, 12 elevator cabs, as well public corridors and washrooms across all 17 levels. The 46 public washrooms feature elegantly designed epoxy terrazzo floors and bases, with sloped underbeds for efficient drainage, blending functionality with aesthetics. A standout feature is the striking staircase that connects the ground to the first floor, showcasing 5-foot-long self-supporting epoxy terrazzo treads with detailed nosing, all underpinned by a meticulously leveled concrete slab for a flawless finish.
